Weekend Itinerary

An optional two-day plan around Ekvira and Lonavala

In short

If you have a weekend, you can pair a visit to the Ekvira Devi Temple with the wider Lonavala area. Day 1: the temple and the Karla Caves. Day 2: nearby forts, lakes and viewpoints — Bhaja, Lohagad and the Lonavala lookouts. This is an optional plan; accommodation and third-party attractions are not endorsed and should be booked and verified independently.

An optional two days

A weekend lets you take the climb and darshan at an easy pace on the first day, then spend the second exploring the hills and lakes around Lonavala. Nothing here is required — treat it as a menu of ideas. The temple and the caves are the anchor; the rest is up to you and your time, fitness and interests.

Day 1 — Temple & Karla Caves

Spend the first day on the hill itself. Arrive in the morning, climb the stairway of several hundred steps, and take darshan at the temple, which is free. Then see the ASI-protected Karla Caves while they are open — they close earlier than the temple, so visit them before the late afternoon. The caves are separately ticketed; confirm the current ASI charge on site.

For a step-by-step version of this first day, including timing, family and monsoon notes, follow the one-day itinerary. For the climb, see The Climb & Accessibility, and for cave hours and rules see the cave visitor information.

Day 2 — Nearby forts, lakes & viewpoints

The second day is for the wider area. The hills around Karla and Lonavala hold some well-loved spots, all of which are managed by others — we describe them only as ideas, not as part of the temple visit.

  • Bhaja Caves — another ancient rock-cut Buddhist site near Malavli, a short distance from Karla, often paired with a visit to the area.
  • Lohagad Fort — a hill fort above Malavli with a well-known walk to its fortifications and long views over the Maval countryside.
  • Lonavala viewpoints & lakes — the popular hill-station lookouts and lakes around Lonavala, especially scenic after the rains.

For more on the surrounding area, see Nearby Places. Check access, opening times, trail conditions and any entry rules for each spot directly, as these are independent of the temple.

Stays and attractions are not endorsed — verify and book independently. We do not run, recommend or vouch for any hotels, homestays, tour operators, forts, caves, lakes or other third-party attractions mentioned here. Conditions, access, timings and safety at those places are outside the temple's control. Book accommodation and confirm every third-party attraction directly with the operator or the relevant authority before you rely on it.

Travel between the two days

Karla sits off the Mumbai–Pune corridor: Mumbai is about 110 km (2–2.5 hours), Pune about 60 km (~1.5 hours), and Lonavala about 11 km away. Malavli is the closest railway station and Lonavala the larger railhead. Plan your base and transfers around these — see How to Reach for routes and the last mile.

Travel responsibly

The forts, caves and lakes around Lonavala are shared natural and heritage places. Carry your litter out, keep to marked paths, do not deface or damage monuments, respect local communities and any protected-site rules, and take extra care in the monsoon when trails and viewpoints can be slippery and the area sometimes sees seasonal safety advisories. See Best Time & Weather before you go.
